Ricardo Montalban
(1920 - )
Biography from Katz's Film Encyclopedia
Occupation: Actor
Born: November 25, 1920, Mexico City, Mexico
Partly educated in the US, Montalban played bit roles in several Broadway
productions before making his film debut in his native land in the early 40s. He
was recruited by MGM in 1947 and was used as a "Latin lover" type in a
number of the studio's films. He tried to break away from the image with
nonromantic dramatic roles at MGM and later elsewhere and eventually was given
an opportunity to demonstrate a wider acting range on TV. He has appeared in
numerous TV dramas, including many segments of "The Loretta Young
Show," starring his sister-in-law Loretta Young. He also appeared in a
number of Broadway plays and in the early 70s toured the US with Agnes Moorehead
and Paul Henreid in a dramatic reading from G. B. Shaw's Don Juan in Hell,
playing the title role. Best known for playing Mr. Roarke, the mysterious host
on the TV series "Fantasy Island." Montalban had one of his most
notable big screen roles late in his career, as the villainous Khan in the
second installment of the popular Star Trek series, THE WRATH OF KHAN.
